Mood Disorders Therapy:

Understanding and Treating Emotional Health

Are you feeling overwhelmed by persistent sadness, irritability, or unpredictable mood swings? Mood disorders can affect how you think, feel, and function — impacting relationships, work, and everyday life. Whether you're experiencing prolonged depressive symptoms or dramatic shifts between emotional highs and lows, you're not alone, and you don’t have to navigate this journey by yourself.

At Mind Matters Counseling, we specialize in helping individuals understand and manage mood disorders through personalized, evidence-based therapy. Our goal is to support you in regaining emotional balance, building resilience, and improving your overall well-being.

What Are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are a category of mental health conditions that primarily affect a person’s emotional state. They involve ongoing feelings of sadness, emptiness, or irritability — or, in some cases, cycles of emotional highs and lows.

These disorders can vary in severity and duration, but all mood disorders can disrupt your ability to manage daily responsibilities, maintain relationships, and experience a fulfilling life. With the right support and treatment plan, mood disorders are highly manageable — and healing is possible.

Types of Mood Disorders We Treat

We offer specialized therapy for a wide range of mood disorders. Each condition is unique, and our clinicians tailor treatment to meet your specific needs.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in activities once enjoyed. Symptoms may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy levels, and difficulty concentrating.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

A chronic form of depression lasting two years or more. While symptoms may be less severe than MDD, their long-term presence can significantly impact quality of life.

Bipolar I Disorder

Involves episodes of full-blown mania — elevated mood, increased activity, impulsivity — often followed by depressive episodes. These mood shifts can be intense and disruptive without treatment.

Bipolar II Disorder

Defined by alternating periods of major depression and hypomania, a less severe form of mania. Individuals often seek treatment during depressive episodes and may not recognize the hypomanic periods as problematic.

Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia)

A milder, chronic form of bipolar disorder. It involves fluctuating low-level depressive and hypomanic symptoms over at least two years, often going undiagnosed.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

A form of depression that typically occurs in the fall or winter months due to reduced sunlight. Common symptoms include low energy, changes in sleep patterns, and mood changes that improve in the spring.

Mood Disorder Due to a Medical Condition or Substance Use

Mood symptoms directly linked to a medical illness, medication, or substance use. Proper diagnosis and collaborative care are essential for treatment and recovery.
